Dieter Rams (1932), Designer

Dieter Rams (born on May 20th, 1932 in Wiesbaden, Germany) is one of the most influential Designers of consumer products and closely associated with the Functionalist school of Industrial Design. He was Head of Design at the German company Braun from 1968 to 1998 and was appointed to a professorship in I.D. at the HFBK Hamburg in 1981. Today, several of the products the pioneering Modernist Rams designed with the conviction “less, but better” are now exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Recently, it became pretty obvious that his style is a major influence on Jonathan Ive’s work as SVP of Industrial Design at Apple Inc., Rams acknowledges this compliment.

Good design is innovative… makes a product useful… is aesthetic… helps us to understand a product… is unobtrusive… is honest… is durable… is consequent to the last detail… is concerned with the environment… is as little design as possible.
